Star Destroyer

i think iv'e heard it from about 8 different people that i should go to lollapalooza. im very aware of the how awesomeness itll be. im also aware of the recockulous price of tickets. $ 135? dayumn! i got kids to feed! but! on the other hand, it is a sexy line up. wilco, shins, and very importantly, the new pornographers, aka "why canada exists".
which brings me to Daniel Bejar, who is 1/8th of the supergroup. Though Mr. Bejar had released solo efforts prior to New Pornographers under the title Destroyer, it wasn't until his post-porn life with the release of Streekhawk: A Seduction did he gain solo credibility. Thereafter, Destoyer released Your Blues, later rerecording some tracks with fellow touring band Frog Eyes and releasing them on Notorious Lightning & Other Works.

the latest outing entitled Rubies, is reflective of Destroyer's collaborations with Frog Eyes. Rubies is Destroyers' rawest and most consise album to date.

plus he's got the craaaaziest story telling voice ever.

"Ghostface Killllllllllah................No one can get illa." ODB. R.I.P., March 30, 2006
Reviewer: r.l.will.sun. - See all my reviews
This is the album that I needed in my life. From top to bottom, it's the crazy sh1t I heard in since....since.....since, REDMAN'S classic "WHUT, THEE ALBUM." I thought SUPREME CLIENTELLE was crazy......but this joint is the CRAZIEST....peace to the NAUGHTY. Hopefully, if the rest of the east coast artist can live up to this, then we can honestly say.......we're bacccccccK. This album is remarkable, hip hop. Beats, rhymes, concepts......9 Milli Bros. (WU TANG CLAN.) The GODS must be crazy. PEACE.........r.l.will.sun...

My introduction to Daniel Johnston couldn't have come at a better time. His greatest hits compilation Welcome to My World (iTunes) was released on April 18, 2006, and the biographical documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston is being shown in select cities including ours at Landmark Century Theater.

So who is Daniel Johnston? Well, he's from Texas. And he's bipolar. And he writes trippy morbid folk songs. And he doodles.

Though obscure, he has a devoted cult following including the likes of David Bowie and the late Kurt Cobain. In fact, an entire tribute album, The Late Great Daniel Johnston: Discovered Covered (iTunes), came out in 2004, with covers by impressive indie rock talent such as Beck, Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes and Sparklehorse with the Flaming Lips, among others.

when keeping it real goes bad...

Now I'm no veteran to the Wu Tang catalog, but since I once bought a Wu Wear long sleeved shirt, I feel it only right to bring to light an album those of us with our ears fixated to guitar licks and meg white's drum beats may have missed. [that was the definition of a run on sentence] Wu Tang- or rather Dreddy Krueger's- Think Differently Music displays some of underground hip hop's rising mc's over wu tang beats, specifically unused scraps of wu tang beats that were sifted through by Mr. Krueger and then put together quite admirably into a cohesive group. Give it a listen and pour some out for O.D.B. Then call Dan Krueger and ask him why his Facebook always has something about homosexual anal sex written in it.

because peninsulas never last.

Return to the Sea, the debut album of Islands, a group formed by Nick Diamonds and J'aime Tambeur (previously of the Unicorns), melds the distinctive sound of their former band with more experimental styles, including collaborations with members of Arcade Fire and Wolf Parade. Did you just orgasm? Because I did.

See them on May 17 at the Metro.

Baby Wars (updated)

so today i got back from my classes, loaded up my homepage (which happens to be pitchfork because im a jackass like that), and low and behold, sufjan news.

via pitchforkmedia:

The latest salsa-hot collabo comes courtesy of lovable former Sub Pop songstress Rosie Thomas, who has recruited two fellow lovable, wholesome folkies to spruce up her latest batch of recordings. The boys in question: Sufjan Stevens and Philly singer-songwriter Denison Witmer.

And that's not all Rosie (Thomas) and Sufjan (Stevens) have been collaborating on, as the two lovesongbirds are having a baby together. Serious! For once, Pitchfork is not joking.

"Sufjan and I are also expecting and that is something we both are beaming about," wrote Rosie. "Life is good."

wait what?

so who you ask is the little lady that just yoko ono'd sufjan's 50 states project? it turns out that rosie thomas is not only talented, but pretty cute. i mean, look at that face! that baby is going to be 2 CuUuUuTe!!! will it out-cute brangelina's baby? we'll see. but if this kid doesn't turn out to be the second coming, i think it's safe to say that he's probably not coming back. careful, rosie! our salvation may rest with you.

but still not cuter than this
rabbit with a cup on his head.

Pitchfork goes on to tell us that Rosie Thomas is no longer on Subpop, so the yet to be titled collaboration is up for grabs in terms of who will distribute it. I suggest the remaining labels compete for the album a la legends of the hidden temple. the winner will get the album, while the losers will be fed to Olmec. and from what iv'e seen, people rarely win.
Anyways, here's a sample of what Ms. Rosie Thomas has to offer the world:

Sasha says:
Wait, I thought Rosie Thomas was that football guy who sang It's All Right to Cry on Free to Be... You and Me. No?

----------------------------------------------
UPDATE:
so it turns out that rosie thomas is NOT having sufjan's oh sacred child of scripture. as pitchfork reports today, the whole thing was a hoax, and even sufjan didn't know. id love to see his face the moment he learned he got billie jean'd.
read the story here.
the good news (pun intended) is that sufjan is set to release a whole album of outtakes from the Illinois album, entitled The Avalanche.

also good news: nows my chance to get my foot in the door with Rosie Thomas!
i hope you like surfing, Rosie, cause i know im ready to ride your waves!

Oh Billy!

Singer/songwriter/socialist Billy Bragg's box set Vol. 1, released March 7, 2006, includes four remastered albums:

as well as a shitload of bonus tracks. I listened to a lot of it at Virgin the other day, and it is a thing of beauty.

Hey, did you see him at Double Door a couple weeks back? Well why don't you brag about it. He's back in England now, so I'm S.O.L. as per usual.

Horses are the new Monkeys are the new Wolves

Band of Horses, a five-tet hailing from Seattle, Washington, are the latest band to join the list of indie hypedom/saviors of the known universe.

here's what Subpop has to say about their latest investment:

Buoyed by Bridwell's warm, reverb-heavy vocals (which strangely channel a dichotomous blend of Wayne Coyne, Brian Wilson and Doug Martsch,) Band of Horses' woodsy, dreamy songs ooze with amorphous tension, longing and hope. At times raggedly epic ("The Great Salt Lake") and delicately pensive ("St. Augustine," "Monsters"), Everything All the Time is an album painted gorgeously in fragile highs and lows.

raggedly epic? would never had come up with that. Their latest LP, Everything All The Time, is much more a grower than a shower, with their Shins-like pop tenets and creamy reverbed out vocals of my Morning Jacket (which in fact are two bands with proven track records for success!)
